Standing Stones Rigg
on Sunday 11th October 2026
CLOK logo
Location:

Standing Stones Rigg is to the east of the A171 about 8 kilometres south of Whitby.  Parking is at grid reference NZ 930046.  The best postcode is YO22 4QB.  It's a short distance east of the car park, and if you're coming via the A171 – as you should be! – your sat nav will bring you past the car park on the way to the postcode.  The What3words reference for the car park is ///meanwhile.mimes.behaving.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

From the A171 Whitby to Scarborough road, turn east on to the road signposted to Fylingthorpe and Robin Hood's Bay.  After 800m, turn right into the car park.  Please note that drivers coming from the other direction will have a restricted view as they'll be coming over the brow of a hill just to the east of the turn into the car park and some vehicles travel quite fast on this road, so take extra care as you turn into the car park.

The main parking area will be the public car park on the south side of the road (as described above).  Overflow parking will be on the verge of the lane that extends south-east from the car park.

Download and Enquiries will be adjacent to the car park.

Terrain:

The area consists of open moorland with mixed runnability, including grass, bilberry and well-managed patchy heather.  The marshes are all crossable but, for conservation reasons, please avoid them if at all possible.

Archaeological features abound, including bronze age burial mounds and standing stones.  No controls will be located on known sensitive ancient monuments.

Road Crossings and Terrain Safety

Most of the courses cross a private road, which has very little traffic.  (This is the track/road running south-east from the car park.)

The courses intended mainly for seniors – i.e. Short Green to Brown – will have two timed-out crossing over the busy public road that leads to Robin Hood's Bay.  The 'out' and 'back' road crossings will be at the same place, so you will be punching the same pair of controls twice – albeit in a different order on the way back.  Each crossing will be timed out up to a maximum of 2 minutes.

Please take your time crossing the public road and be extra vigilant for traffic.  As was mentioned above, some vehicles travel fast on this road.  Also, please note that;

  • Apart from at the designated, timed-out crossing point, the public road is strictly out of bounds.
  • There will be a temporary stile over a fence adjacent to the crossing point.  You must use this stile to cross the fence.  Do not climb over the fence itself.

Please remember that sheep droppings can transmit E. Coli and tick bites can transmit Lyme disease.  Also, the Planner runs in this area twice per week, and has been fortunate enough to see adders.  These won't bother you if you don't bother them, but please be aware of adder bite symptoms.

The competition area includes exposed moorland, and in the event of bad weather it's possible that cagoules may be made compulsory.  Please come prepared.

Courses:
Course  Length    Climb
Brown7.4 km140m
Blue5.6 km85m
Green4.6 km70m
Short Green   3.3 km55m
Light Green 3.2 km50m

Yellow2.5 km40m

The course lengths are subject to final controlling.

Map:

The Brown and Blue courses will have 1:10,000 maps.   The other courses will have 1:7,500 maps.   All the maps will have 5m contours.

The map has recently been extended to include the moor on the north side of the road to Robin Hood's Bay.

The control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and loose copies will be available.

Punching system:

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

If you need to hire an SI-card (£1), please order it via the Racesignup online entry system and collect it from Download before your run.  Remember to return it as you download, and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.  A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day, but please pre-order via the online entry system if at all possible.

British Orienteering members are covered by British Orienteering's public liability insurance while participating in this event.  Non-members are not covered.

Note: Public liability insurance covers you against liability for causing harm to someone else.  For example, it would cover you if you were sued for accidentally injuring a member of the public or causing damage to property during the event.  It's fair to say that most people go through life without worrying about public liability insurance.

Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle while participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
