South Gare is on the NE coast, just west of Redcar.

Parking will be in the Majuba Road car park.  The postcode is TS10 5BJ and the What3words reference of the entrance to the car park is ///fired.scope.firms.

Approaching from the west on the A174, turn left at the Wilton roundabout on to the A1042 towards Redcar.  Continue straight on – the road turns into Kirkleatham Lane and then Majuba Road – until the road bends right through 90 degrees, after which you will see the car park on your left.

If you're planning to park in the Majuba Road car park, you might like to download the RingGo parking app and use it to pay your parking fee.  The location number is 4168.  That will save you having to mess around with the parking ticket machines.

Blue badge holders can park for free for up to three hours.  For everyone else, the parking charges are £1.5 for one hour, £2.50 for two hours or £4.00 for three hours.

Note that your vehicle must fit into the marked spaces.  There are some spaces big enough for minibuses and motor homes.

If you wish, you can find alternative parking nearby and walk or cycle to the Majuba Road car park.  There are several car parks in Redcar town centre that offer free parking on Sundays.

You are very welcome to come to this event by public transport.  It's a 1.5 km walk from Redcar Central railway station to the Majuba Road car park.

Download will be in the NW corner of the Majuba Road car park.

South Gare is a spit of land created in the 19th Century to extend and improve Teesport.  Dorman Long – and probably other Iron Masters – dumped lines of slag from the blast furnaces to create the base for the breakwater and the road.

Sand dunes and slag ridges give a very technical relief with a profusion of small hills, knolls, gullies and depressions.  Paths offer fast progress.  Nearly all of the paths are mapped and can be used for navigation, but it's still wise to use other features for confirmation, as dog walkers tend to create new paths quite rapidly.

The sand is quite consolidated on the landward side, but becomes soft close to the beach.  The Marram grass can make running off the paths quite uncomfortable.

Safety notes:

• In the dunes, you will encounter steep slopes, loose sand and holes ..... and while it's quite likely that you'll land on soft sand, there are also areas where slag from the old blast furnaces has been dumped, leaving rocky areas that would definitely not give a pleasant landing.  Please take care.
• Due to the potential for cuts and scratches, all competitors must wear full leg cover.

Please note:

• There is some litter and flotsam / jetsam debris hidden in the grass.  There are also the remains of barbed wire and wooden fences in the area, and although quite a lot of the fence wire hidden in the Marram grass has been removed, what remains can pose a trip hazard to the unwary.
• A black circle on the map – and the 'sculpture' symbol in the control descriptions – denote a 4m high stone sculpture.
• The road along the southern edge of the competition area is out of bounds to competitors, including during your run.
• Marshes that are shown as 'out of bounds' on the competition maps MUST NOT BE CROSSED, even if they look crossable on the day of the event.  These marshes have SSSI protection, and any incursion into them would risk our future use of this top-quality orienteering area.  Anyone seen crossing an 'out of bounds' marsh will be disqualified.
• Full leg cover is compulsory.  Although the area may appear 'open', the marram grass can be pretty vicious to unprotected legs.

Note:  South Gare and Coatham Dunes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA).  Natural England only allow orienteering in this area during September, when it will have minimal impact on the protected wildlife, flora and fauna.

The Brown and Blue courses will probably have two-sided maps.  This will be confirmed nearer the time of the event.

The Brown and Blue maps will be 1:7,500.   The other course maps will be 1:5,000 scale     All the course maps will have 2.5m contours

Control descriptions will be printed on the maps, and loose copies will be available at the Start.

SPORTident electronic punching will be used.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

If you need to hire an SI-card (£1), please order it via the Racesignup online entry system and collect it from Download before your run.  Remember to return it as you download, and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.  A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day, but please pre-order via the online entry system if at all possible.

The entry deadline is midnight on Sunday 13‑Sep‑2026.  After that, you will still be able to enter until midnight on Thursday 17‑Sep‑2026, but there will be a £2 late entry surcharge for Seniors and your choice of course may be limited by map availability.

There will be very limited entry on the day subject to the availability of maps (and, of course, the late entry surcharge) ..... but please pre-enter if you can.

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.       Courses close at 2 p.m.

The Start is approximately 1.2 km from the NW corner of the Majuba Road car park.  Follow the taped route.
Note: As most of the route is along the beach, your walking speed may be a bit slower than usual.

From the Finish, there is a 500m walk along a good, surfaced public footpath to get back to Download.

There are public toilets in the Majuba Road car park (adjacent to the Redcar Beach Base).

First Aid at Download.

No drinks will be provided at the Finish.  Redcar town centre has plenty of opportunities for post-race refreshment.

Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event, but must be kept on leads at all times and must not be taken out into the competition area.  You may also exercise your dog on the beach (and may let it off the lead as long as you are sure it will not cause a nuisance to other beach users and it will come back to you when you call it).

You must, of course, clean up after your dog.  (And you risk getting a £100 fine from Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council if you fail to do so.)

British Orienteering members are covered by British Orienteering's public liability insurance while participating in this event.  Non-members are not covered.

Note: Public liability insurance covers you against liability for causing harm to someone else.  For example, it would cover you if you were sued for accidentally injuring a member of the public or causing damage to property during the event.  It's fair to say that most people go through life without worrying about public liability insurance.

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.
