| Terrain: |
The Eston Hills are situated on the northern extremity of the Yorkshire Jurassic Escarpment, and offer magnificent views over the Tees Estuary. There are three distinct parts to the competition area Eston Bank, Lazenby Bank and Eston Moor. Lazenby Bank, the most northerly part of the scarp slope, is heavily wooded, with mainly broadleaf trees, and is largely very runnable. It is steep, with complex contour and rock detail, partly as a result of extensive ironstone mining in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is now managed by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust. Eston Bank, to the south west, is similarly steep and well contoured but is more open, with many copses, scattered trees and gorse thickets separated by dead bracken. This part of the slope is rich in paths, especially downhill MTB paths, some of which will be framed with a 40% purple symbol to recommend avoidance. But beware, mountain bikes (and even off road motor bikes) could be encountered on any path. Eston Moor extends southwards from the highest point on the escarpment (Eston Nab). It is relatively flat but undulating moorland with several paths. The area still features some large patches of heather and gorse moorland but recent years have seen the spread of self-generated birch woodland. This is sometimes dense, but often quite runnable as it gains maturity. The moor is also rich in archaeology, with monuments dating back to the Bronze Age and even earlier. Please note that:-
