Location: |
Coatham Wood is on the north-east side of Long Newton Lane, which runs between Long Newton (just south of the A66) and Urlay Nook (just west of Yarm).
Parking will be at the old Elementis Works site on the north-east
side of Long Newton Lane about 600m to the south of the small Coatham Wood
public car park. The entrance to the car park is at grid reference NZ 401149. The nearest postcode is TS16 0QG, but please note that this is a short distance SE of the car park. What3words reference of the entrance to the car park is ///drive.trombone.initial. The entrance to (and exit from) the car park is via these blue gates. Click on the link to see a map. You can switch to Satellite mode and zoom in to see the details of the final approach to the car park. You can also get directions if you specify your starting location. When driving into (and out of) the car park, please watch out for orienteers walking to the Start and back from the Finish. Terrain: |
Coatham Wood has now become an established wood with a large path/track network on a relatively flat area. The wood is used by many local people from the surrounding area, including lots of dog walkers. Please be considerate towards these other users of the area and, for your own safety, watch out for long dog leads! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Punching system: |
SPORTident electronic punching will be used. The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish. If you need to hire an SI-card (£1), please order it via the Racesignup online entry system and collect it from Download before your run. Remember to return it as you download, and take care of it, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it. A limited number of SI-cards will be available for hire on the day, but please pre-order via the online entry system if at all possible. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

If you wish to participate in this event, please pre-enter via the Racesignup online entry system.
The entry deadline is midnight on Sunday 5‑Oct‑2025. After that, you will still be able to enter until midnight on Friday 10‑Oct‑2025, but there will be a £2 late entry surcharge for Seniors and your choice of course may be limited by map availability. There will be very limited entry on the day subject to the availability of maps (and, of course, the late entry surcharge) ..... but please make every effort to pre-enter if you possibly can. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Start and Finish: |
The Start is approximately 420m from the car park. Follow the taped route out through the blue gates and then north-west along the verge of Long Newton Lane. Please walk on the grass verge, not on the road vehicles travel along Long Newton Lane at high speed. After 190m, duck under the wooden fence into Coatham Wood and follow the taped route another 150m to the Start. There is a remote Finish in Coatham Wood. The walk back to the car park (and Download) is approximately 620m. From the Finish, follow the taped route south-east to where the route to the Start crossed the fence. Then walk south-east along the grass verge again staying off the road back to the blue gates. Facilities: |
Portable toilet in the car park. No drinks will be provided. Please bring your own refreshments for after your run. First aid at Download. The remote Finish will be manned, and there will be a small first aid kit there. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dogs: | Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome at this event. You can take your dog out on your course, provided that you keep it on a short lead and take great care not to cause a hazard to members of the public or other competitors. (You'll also need to pick up after your dog, of course.) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk. Orienteering is an adventure sport your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility. Please make sure that you download after your run. CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle while participating in this (and every) orienteering event. If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup. Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time. |
