Terrain: Map extracts

A mix of coniferous and hardwood woodland, plus a small area of very runnable beech.  There is also some scrub and areas of undergrowth, brambles, heather and bracken.  The whole competition area is on a steep slope with areas of complex contour detail, mainly due to mining and quarrying, although there are also some natural crags.  There are lots of paths and tracks, some dating from the mining activities and others created by walkers and mountain bikers.

Please note that:-

  • Some paths are covered in leaves, making them indistinct.
  • There are some areas of brambles.
  • Some old paths and abandoned mountain bike tracks have not been mapped.
  • In mid-December, this area can have very slippery conditions underfoot.  Please take care.
  • Watch out for mountain bikers, off-road motor bikes, quad bikes and four-wheel-drive vehicles during your run.
  • Full leg cover is required.  No shorts.
  • Due to the nature of the area and the time of year, it will be compulsory to carry a whistle.  Whistles will be checked at the Start.  If you don't have a whistle, please come to Enquiries, where we will have some whistles to lend out.
  • Depending on the weather, the Organiser might make it compulsory to wear or carry a cagoule.  Please make sure that you come prepared, and look out for signs in the car parking area.

Covid-19:

Although the Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed and serious illness and death are now thankfully rare, Covid-19 continues to circulate at significant levels in the community and Long Covid remains a consideration.  Please continue to take precautions to protect yourself and other people.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of Covid-19 transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Given that:-

  • Please do not attend this event if you have Covid-19 symptoms.  In accordance with Government guidance, if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection you should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.
  • Please maintain social distancing where practical, including from the volunteers on the organising team; e.g. at Download.  In particular, please be considerate and remember that other people may be more concerned about Covid-19 and have a greater desire to maintain social distancing than you do.
  • Before and after your run, you may wish to avoid unnecessary close contact with people outside your household.
  • Continue to maintain good hand hygiene.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

You must carry a whistle while participating in this event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
