This is the fourth and final event in CLOK's Autumn Short Race Series held between October and December 2022.

Newcomers to orienteering:   Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!

Location:

Enquiries and Download will be next to the bandstand at the top of Saltburn Bank and parking will be along the adjacent road (Glenside).  The grid reference of the bandstand is NZ 665212, the nearest postcode is TS12 1JS and the What3words reference is ///inches.cherubs.exploring.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting point.

An alternative option for parking is the Cat Nab public car park at the bottom of Saltburn Bank, but this has quite steep parking charges.

Please note that there will be no orienteering signs to this event.

Terrain:

The competition area is in two sections.  All courses visit the Valley Gardens, a beautifully restored Victorian park in a steep-sided valley, with many paths and steps, ornamental gardens and buildings.  The Youth / Vet and Open courses will also go outside Valley Gardens and visit the seafront, including the promenade (with steeply sloping bank and paths above), the pier and various attractions.

The river in Saltburn Valley Gardens must only be crossed at the bridges – no wading!

Important: Full leg cover is mandatory on all courses.  No shorts, please.

As always, please be considerate to other users of the area.

Courses:

There will be three courses available, with winning times of about 20 - 25 minutes:

Open  2.5 km    140m climb
Youth / Vet (M/W18- and M/W55+)    1.9 km85m climb
Junior (M/W14-)1.3 km60m climb

Important:  Anyone under that age of 16 on the day of the event who wishes to run the Open course or the Youth / Vet course must be accompanied by an adult.  (Under-16s can run the Juniors course unaccompanied.)

Map:

Scale 1:4,000   5m contours

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose copies will be available at the Start.

Punching system:

This event will use SPORTident electronic punching.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the conventional way at the Start and Finish.

SI-cards will be available to hire on the day for a charge of £1.  Please take care of your hired SI-card, as there will be a £20 charge if you lose it.

Entries:

There will be no entry the day.  If you wish to participate in this event, you must pre-enter via Racesignup.

The entry deadline is midnight on Thursday 24‑Nov‑2022.

After that, you will still be able to enter until midnight on Thursday 1‑Dec‑2022, but your choice of course may be limited by map availability.

Times:

Starts: 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.     Courses close at 1 p.m.

The Start is about 5 minutes' walk from the bandstand.  Go down Saltburn Bank (Saltburn Road) to the Cat Nab car park.

Second run: You can run a second course for free, subject to map availability.  Register when you download after your first run, and please start your first run early enough to enable you to finish your second run before the courses close at 1 p.m.
Fees:
Seniors:£5.00
Juniors / Students:     £2.00
Facilities:

There are public toilets in the Cat Nab car park at the bottom of Saltburn Bank.

First aid at Download.

Please either bring your own refreshments or, preferably, visit the Victorian Tea Rooms for coffee and cakes.  The tea rooms, which are planning to be open on the day of the event, are located by the Italian Gardens at the south end of the mapped area (5 minutes walk for Download).  You may be tempted to stop off in the tea rooms partway round your course, but it's probably better to wait until after you've finished your run!

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is planning to be open on the day of the event, but must not be used during your run (!).  Please go for a ride afterwards!
Unfortunately, the Miniature Railway in Saltburn Valley Gardens is closed for the winter.

Dogs: Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event and can be taken out into the competition area, but if you do this then please be very careful not to cause a hazard for other competitors or members of the public.

Covid-19:

Although the Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed and serious illness and death are now thankfully rare, Covid-19 is still affecting significant numbers of people and Long Covid remains a consideration.  Please continue to take precautions to protect yourself and other people ..... including the volunteers who make orienteering events possible.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of Covid-19 transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Given that:-

  • Please do not attend this event if you have Covid-19 symptoms.  In accordance with Government guidance, if you have symptoms of a respiratory infection you should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.
  • Please maintain social distancing where practical, including from the volunteers on the organising team; e.g. at Download.
  • Before and after your run, you may wish to avoid unnecessary close contact with people outside your household.
  • Continue to maintain good hand hygiene.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

CLOK recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup or inform the Organiser before you go out for your run.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
