This is the fourth and final race of the Autumn Short Race Series held between October and December 2021.

Newcomers to orienteering:   Help and advice will be available at this event.  Just come along and ask!

Location:

Parking will be in the car park at the top of Birk Brow hill, on the north side of the A171 three miles east of Guisborough.  The grid reference is NZ 657148, the nearest postcode is TS12 3DF (but please note that this is at Charltons at the bottom of Birk Brow hill) and the What3words reference of the entrance to the car park is ///dishes.frogs.cocoons.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

TAKE GREAT CARE when entering and leaving the car park – indicate and slow down early when entering and only leave the car park via the east (Whitby end) exit, in order to get a better view of on-coming traffic.

The only orienteering event signage will be local to the car park.

Terrain:

The area has two distinct parts, separated by a quiet road.  Low Moor is a sloping area of heather moorland with patches of gorse and a pocket of old quarry workings.  Skelton Warren is mixed woodland with scattered rock features on the steeper slopes to the north of the moor.  The whole area has a good path network.

Please note that full leg cover is required for this event.

Please remember to check yourself for ticks after the event, as they can carry Lyme Disease.

In the event of bad weather, cagoules may be made compulsory.  Please come prepared.

Courses:

There will be three courses available, with winning times of about 20 minutes:
>>  Juniors (M/W14-)
>>  Youth / Vet 55+ (M/W18- and M/W55+)
>>  Open

Courses planned by Chris Wright.

Map:

Scale 1:7,500   A4 size.  Updated in November 2021.  The courses will be overprinted on the maps, which will be printed on waterproof paper.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose copies will be available at the Start.

This event will use SPORTident electronic punching.

The control boxes will be activated to enable SIAC cards to operate in touch-free mode ..... but please note that you will need to punch the old-fashioned way at the Start and Finish.

SI-cards will not be available for hire on the day.  However, SI-card hire can be prearranged.  To reserve a hired SI-card, please contact the Organiser (contact details below) no later than Thursday 2‑Dec‑2021.  The £1.00 hire charge will be added to your account in the CLOK online entry system.  You can collect your hired SI-card – which will be in an envelope labelled with your name – from Download car before your run.  Please remember to return it as you download.  There will be a £20 charge if you lose your hired SI-card.

Safety:

Although most of the Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed, the pandemic is not yet over.  You must not come to this (or any other) event if you should be self-isolating in accordance with Government guidance.  Also, although orienteering is a naturally socially-distanced sport, please continue to act sensibly to avoid Covid-19 transmission.  In particular, avoid unnecessary close contact with people outside your household and maintain good hand hygiene.

You must download even if you do not finish your course.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please inform the Organiser before the event.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.

Please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.
