Location:

Standing Stones Rigg is to the east of the A171 about 8 kilometres south of Whitby.  Parking is at grid reference NZ 920033.  The What3words reference is ///tight.diamonds.forgotten.  There isn't really a good postcode for Standing Stones Rigg, but YO22 4QN is a short distance to the north and YO22 4QL is a short distance to the south.  250m south of the junction between the A171 and the B1416 (Sneaton Corner), turn eastwards on to a farm track.  Please drive slowly on this track, as runners will be crossing it or walking along it.

Click on the link to see a map.  You can zoom in (and, optionally, switch to Satellite mode) to see the details of the final approach to the event.  You can also get directions if you specify your starting location.

Parking is on a friendly, sheep cropped patch of moorland.  We are paying the tenant farmers a parking fee of 50p per adult, which will be collected through the on-line entry system.

Terrain:

The area consists of open moorland with mixed runnability, including grass, bilberry and well-managed patchy heather.

The marshes are all crossable, but please avoid them if at all possible, for conservation reasons.

Archaeological features abound, including bronze age burial mounds and standing stones.  No controls will be placed on known sensitive ancient monuments.

Terrain Safety

All courses cross at least one farm track.  There are very few vehicle movements on these tracks, but please be vigilant.

Please remember that sheep droppings can transmit E. Coli and tick bites can transmit Lyme disease, and please be aware of adder bite symptoms.
Note: The Planner runs in this area twice per week and had been fortunate to encounter adders, but only on one occasion this year.

Note: The competition area includes exposed moorland, and in the event of bad weather it's possible that cagoules may be made compulsory.  Please come prepared.

Covid-19
and other
respiratory
infections:

Covid 19 and other infections – e.g. influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus) continue to circulate in the community.

Orienteering is an outdoor, naturally socially-distanced sport.  However, although you should be relatively safe when you are out on your run, there is a risk of virus transmission during the pre- and post-run activities.

Please:-

  • Do not attend this event if you have respiratory infection symptoms.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene.
  • Be mindful of other people's space.  Some people may be more concerned than you are about avoiding close contact.
Safety:

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the Organiser, but please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Orienteering is an adventure sport – your safety while orienteering is your own responsibility.

Please make sure that you download even if you do not complete your course.

CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle while participating in this (and every) orienteering event.

If you have a relevant medical condition, please add this to your competitor details in Racesignup.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be used if you need medical treatment and are unable to communicate at the time.
