CLOK LEAGUES 2006
I shall continue to compile the CLOK Leagues during 2006, incorporating
several changes to the formulae to try to address the faults and make it as
fair as possible.
Regional Event League
This has a simple formula with a winner of a long course scoring 100 points
and all other competitors scoring at 100 x Winner's time / Competitor's time.
This will not alter but we still have problems here!
a) Which events do we use? I used to use all C1, C2 and C3 events
that any member had been to, but that involved too many events. If we
were to use just events in the North there are still too many, especially with
the JK, the Lakeland 5-Days and the White Rose, etc. this year. If we
used only NEOA events there will not be enough - as in 2005. If there
are no objections I shall use NEOA and YHOA events of C3 and above for the
2006 league.
b) Fair allocation of points for short course results. The same
formula cannot apply unless we have a separate league for short courses.
I therefore have to use an awkward time-consuming calculation based on
mins/km. This process is made even more awkward when course details
(distance/climb) don't appear in the results. However, I shall continue
as before.
District Event League
I shall continue to use only CLOK C4 events and the colour-coded results from
the October Odyssey. The problem here is awarding comparable scores for
the different courses. Mins/km is probably the best basis for Light
Green to Brown but gives anomalous results when applied to the White, Yellow,
Orange and Red courses. There were problems last year when the formula
allowed experienced orienteers on the technical courses to be awarded fewer
points than speedy novices on the Yellow!! During 2005 I had to change
the formula in the middle of the year, and then go back through all the
previous results. In 2006 I propose to allow a maximum of 20 points on
the White course, 30 on the Yellow and 50 on the Orange and Red.
Another problem that arose last year was when a CLOK member missed out in
the scoring because no club was indicated in the results. I naturally
look for 'CLOK' in the results.
Any views? - let me know.
