This is the second of the four races that make up the Autumn Short Race Series being held between September and December 2010.

Full instruction will be available from our qualified coaches – simply turn up and join in.

Location: Registration is at the Hardwick Park Visitor Centre at grid reference NZ 347291.  Follow brown signs from the A689/A177 junction to the south-west of Sedgefield.
Terrain: Restored parkland with temples and follies, a network of lakes and bridges, a good path network, and areas of managed woodland.
Courses:
A:   2.6 km, 60m, 23 controls.
B:1.5 km, 20m climb, 11 controls,  Easy navigation
Both courses will feature fast running all the way.  Anyone can have a go!
Map: 1:4,000 scale, to ISSOM 'sprint' standard.    Updated in 2010.  Pre-marked, and printed on waterproof paper.
If you are not familiar with 'sprint' maps, you can download an excellent guide here.  It shows how these maps represent out-of-bounds areas, forbidden areas, and fences that it is forbidden to cross.
Punching system: This event will use SPORTident electronic punching.  SI cards will be available for hire on the day at a cost of 50p each.  Please look after yours as lost cards will be charged at £30.
Times: Registration: 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.     Starts: 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.
Entries: Seniors:  £2.00     Juniors / Students:  £1.00
You can run a second course for free!
There is no need to pre-enter for the races, but if you are bringing a group then please contact Linda Thornton in advance so that we can print enough maps.
Training: The races will be followed by a CLOK Junior training session.  Adults are also welcome.  Please let us know in advance if you would like to participate.
Bonus!
TempO - an opportunity to hone your map reading skills!
- How quickly can you match the map to the ground ahead?
- Can you judge distances?
- Are you skilled at understanding pictorial descriptions?
- Do you find compass points instinctive no matter which way you are facing?

Two stations will be set up close to registration.  From a fixed position you will look out over a small area where there are 4 or 5 kites.   For identification, reading from left to right they are A to E (or Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo). You are provided with a little booklet of laminated map segments correctly aligned to the view of the kites. Each map segment has a circle and a description.   You use your skills to decide which of the kites match the circle position and the description and tell the official your choice. You are timed from the moment you turn the front page to look at the first map until the moment you give an answer for the final map segment.

For extra interest it is possible that there is no kite at the circle position - then the answer is 'Z' or zero.  Oh, another thing, you might choose the same kite more than once. For example a kite described as (midway) between two trees could also be in a depression - same circle; different description.
Facilities: Toilets.   Cafe & Visitor Centre.   Registration is under cover, and there will be somewhere to leave your belongings while you run.
Dogs: Well controlled dogs only, please.
Contact: Linda Thornton     Tel: 01287-635829
Safety: Please remember that competitors take part at their own risk.  Your safety whilst orienteering is your own responsibility.
CLOK strongly recommends that you carry a whistle whilst participating in this and every orienteering event.
Please make sure that you download even if you do not finish your course.
