SUBJECT:   Brown course
Similar experience to Pippa/Alastair at control 1 - though control fairly obvious once in the circle.
Went straight 12-13 on same logic (if sadly not at same speed) as Duncan - couldn't decide which was quicker so went for the more interesting option.
Dave - don't worry - I don't think it's your eyesight - I couldn't find the line of butts either!
One (very minor) map comment - seemed slightly odd that the key didn't match the map (no isolated trees on map, no cairn on key) - I would never normally notice but took a unusual interest in both when I was blundering around near ctrl 11.
Thanks all - great to have a CLOK brown course at 8+ km (even if it did give Pippa time to finish the flapjack before I made it back!)

SUBJECT:   Constructive Comments
First the positives; I thoroughly enjoyed the LG course (despite two stupid errors -but that is something to learn from) and Elaine the Orange .
Now the constructive criticism; Signposting -people arrive at junctions from both directions signs facing both ways make it much easier ( I went through Great Ayton Twice)!
Car Parking- despite driving down from Newcastle I nearly left because I couldn't find anywhere to park - I know everywhere was muddy but a few marshals would have been invaluable.
50 metre climb to the first control on the short  courses -through mud. I registered 170bpm before the first control and passed a mother carrying one child and helping another (pre-school) through the mud; something that could put beginners off forever.
As I said intended as constructive criticism.

Thanks to all,it was great to go to an event after such a long break.  I really felt my age on the Green going from 7 to 8, did anyone contour round the Valley?
On the Blue at that first control, the newly felled area was vaguely mapped in Dec so the edge of the area could be out of position relative to the re-entrant.  The re-entrant position was not changed.  A number of changes were made to the lines of Shooting Butts, but not those around 5 on the Green.  Are they there on the ground?

I agree exactly with Alastair's assessment of no.1 on the Blue. I also had a problem with no.5 on the Blue as there seemed to be a large gully on the stright line prior to the one containing the control. I can't find this first one on my map, but distance to the correct gully seemed to be correct so it's as much my mistake for stopping early.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the runnability of the heather (although I think your legs might be longer rather than the heather shorter Duncan!), and found the Blue course enjoyable and a perfect opportunity to practice my compass bearings. A good event with minimum fuss (and good flapjack). Thanks.

SUBJECT:   #1 on the Blue
I agree with Duncan that #1 on the Blue and Brown was a bit vague.  I went along the track and used the fence junction as an attack point.  (See RouteGadget once I upload my Garmin track.)  As I went up the slope I could see what looked like a re-entrant directly above me ...... but no kite.  When I stopped to try to work out where I was I noticed the control about 10m to my left.  I think that the kite may have been placed at the NW edge of the circle as marked on the map.  Certainly, I couldn't make out any re-entrant around the kite.

Thanks for the event.  It was my first attempt at orienteering since 1st January.  I was doing the Blue course because I've probably got a tropical parasite at the moment, acquired in Ethiopia last November.  The treatment is apparently straightforward and effective, but the consultant doesn't want to start me on it until he's checked whether I've got anything else as well!  (He's getting my blood tested for quite an impressive list of different 'nasties'.)

Good event.  Nice that the heather wasn't as deep as I remembered, and the snow had done a good job of knocking the bracken down.

My only quibble was with number #1 on brown (also on blue), which seemed vague, and further on the ground from the end of the felled area than the map suggested.  No significant time lost though.

I'd be interested to know what people did 12-13 on the brown.  I went up close to the wall, and then down and up across the valley.  Round the valley head looked a long way, although maybe similar time-wise (but definitely more boring!).

I was amused afterwards to discover the brown part 2 map had been shrunk slightly to get it all on to A4 (including all the track along the top, and the road on the bottom), making it about 1:10,500 instead of 1:10,000.  I'm not going to use it as an excuse for any mistakes though...
