CLOK's Orienteering Development Programme started in January 1997, with the objective of furthering the sport of orienteering throughout the general community in CLOK's area.

The programme started out on a voluntary basis, and there is still a substantial input from CLOK volunteers --- Mike Hardy puts in more than 20 hours per week and other CLOK members assist at events.  This voluntary input is now supplemented by the work of two part-time professional officers, whose costs are covered by grants from the British Orienteering Federation and several other funding bodies.

With the support of a number of partners --- including the Local Authorities of Darlington, Hambleton, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Richmondshire and Stockton-on-Tees, together with The Tees Forest, Forest Enterprise and the National Trust --- over the last seven years the Orienteering Development Programme has delivered:

>>   12 permanent courses suitable for trail orienteering.
>> 25 regular permanent orienteering courses.
>> 1 canoe-orienteering course (on the River Tees in Stockton).
>> Orienteering maps of 10 special schools, 87 primary schools and 52 secondary schools.
(Some of this work is currently in progress.)
>> 31 Teacher/Leader courses and 12 Instructor courses for teachers, community group leaders and Local Authority personnel.

Orienteering Development Programme personnel have recently been invited to offer orienteering in the Tees Valley Youth Games.

On an annual basis, the Orienteering Development Programme runs a seven-event orienteering league for Cleveland schools.  In 2003 this league attracted 120 - 300 competitors per event from 13 - 19 schools in the Tees Valley Boroughs.  For more information about this year's schools league see the Schools Orienteering section of this web site.

Following on from their participation in the Cleveland schools orienteering league, in 2003 Clavering Primary School, Laurence Jackson School, Yarm Preparatory School and Yarm School participated in the British Schools Orienteering Championships in Delamere Forest, Cheshire.  Clavering Primary School and Laurence Jackson School also attended the British Schools Score Championships in North Yorkshire.
